It was announced by Namco Monday on its Japanese-language website that Masaya Nakamura passed away January 22 at the age of 91. Nakamura pioneered the video game Pac-Man and founded the giant gaming company Namco. He owned the company for 10 years along with the Nikkatsu film company.
Namco was founded in 1955. The company merged with another Japanese games firm, Bandai, to form Namco-Bandai in 2005. Nakamura retained an honorary position and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government for his services to industry.
Pac-Man was invented by Toru Iwatani as coin-operated game in 1980. the game expanded onto consoles, merchandise, TV series, theme parks and a film.
