Star Trek 4 was confirmed this week. In a conversation with Postmedia Network, J.J. Abrams has confirmed that Chekov will not be recast.
“I would say there’s no replacing [Yelchin]. There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.” The producer also told the outlet that discussions are being had with the writers of the next “Star Trek” to figure out the best way to address the loss of Chekov in the Kelvin timeline.
“We knew going into this movie it would be a bit of a heartbreak just because of Leonard [Nimoy]. We had no idea just how devastating events would become.”
Actor Anton Yelchin passed away at the age of 27 in a tragic accident where he was pinned between his car and a brick mailbox attached to the security gate of his San Fernando Valley home one month ago. Star Trek Beyond is the first project to be released following his death. Directed by Justin Lin, the film hits theaters on July 22.
