RZA and Common Team Up for Black Samurai TV Series

Black Samurai, based on the 1974 novel by Marc Olden, is headed to the small screen. Common is set to star in the coming series as Robert Sand. The character is an American GI who is shot while on leave in Tokyo. He is rescued by Master Konuma and trained in martial arts. After Konuma is slaughtered, the Black Samurai embarks on a mission of revenge, hunting down the people who killed his master. The series is being spearheaded by Andre Gaines. Gaines said to Variety:

“Robert Sand is like black Jason Bourne. Black Samurai is one of the most unique, timely and fun experiences I’ve ever read, while at the same time tackling some serious subjects around race and diversity.”

RZA, perhaps best known as the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, will serve as executive producer. Previously, he directed and starred in 2012’s The Man with the Iron Fists. No word yet on writers or directors – so stay tuned.
