Cullen Bunn Confirms Aquaman Departure

Cullen Bunn has confirmed during an Reddit AMA session that he will be leaving Aquaman with January’s issue #48. Bunn began his run June with issue #41. When asked about his departure, Bunn said:

AQM-Cv48-8f55b-33445“There are a number of reasons I left ‘Aquaman. I actually quit the book before my first issue even came out. The reaction from fans was brutal and disheartening even before they read my first issue. My editor (who is great) asked me to stick with it, so I did. The fan reaction didn’t improve. This was such a different take on the character, a lot of diehard Aquaman fans couldn’t accept it. I was accused of not talking about the book, but every time I did, I got hate tweets and hate mail. I don’t need that, and it kind of made me loathe the character. In the end, I think this wasn’t the right story to tell with Aquaman, so I felt it was time for me to move on. Someone else can come on and be a hero. There’s a bunch of other stuff, too, but it’s best we don’t dwell on it.”

Bunn also discussed his Uncanny X-Men team, confirming Monet will be a team member. He said of the project:

“There have been some surprises along the way. I am most excited for where I’m going with Sabretooth, I think, but that’s a real long game. Monet was a bit of a challenge (in terms of finding the through-line for her character) but once I found that, she’s been a pure delight to write. Each character has their own challenges, but also lots of potential for interesting stories going forward.”

“#1 will arrive in January, 2016. Stay tuned, kids.
