On October 14th The highly anticipated Skottie Young creation “ I Hate Fairyland”, debuted. However, if you are like me and got your local LCS a little late, you may have ended up with the variant “F*ck Fairyland”. I am the first to admit this is not a book forever everyone. It has uber cartoon violence, and reads like a demented cartoon from the 1930’s. Everything is adorable, everything talks, and everything is colorful, except Gert. Gert the story’s protagonist had her childhood wish granted and was whisked away to the magically delightful Fairyland. A few decades later the magic has worn off and Gert just wants out. However, she can’t get out. Her solution is to makes everyone around her a miserable as she is in a hail of violence that would make Atila the Hun proud.
Within the first few pages Gert takes out enough precious talking creature to qualify as genocide, in truly hilarious fashion. She then stumbles through Fairyland creating enough to piss off the queen and everyone else. It’s against the rules for the queen to harm Gert, but that doesn’t mean she can’t hire someone else to do it. Even though this is as review, I don’t want to give too much away. The tone of the book is incredibly irreverent, and at times totally over the top, but if that surprises, you must be totally unfamiliar with the book’s creator. If you are did not enjoy Skottie Young’s take on Rocket Raccoon, the steer clear. This Yong without the breaks, creating side gags, and inside jokes galore and it makes this reader giddy. I found the whole thing laugh out loud silly, and I can’t to see where it goes. This is a book that is for fun. It not a huge political message, or deep seeded metaphor about the inner man, it is for fun and laughs and I got many reading this book. Also being a preschool teacher for so long, I can relate to the pain of being trapped in a G rated world. It makes you want to do all of the inappropriate things at once, and Gert, much to my delight, certainly does.
