Rupert Wyatt is leaving 20th Century Fox’s upcoming X-Men spinoff film, set to star Channing Tatum in the title role. Rupert Wyatt has issued the following statement, “I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.” The film is still scheduled to start production in early 2016, with a new director expected to be on board soon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, an escalating budget due to script issues also contributed to Wyatt’s exit.
