Double Page Spread Episode 122 – Marvel and Hip Hop4

Recently Marvel comics announced a month of hip hop themed variant covers, recreating famous album covers with their titles. This brought into light an issue about the lack of African Americans hired by the company and diversity both on the page and behind the scenes. In this episode Wendi is joined by artist Julian Lytle (Ignorant Bliss podcast), Rafael Sanz (No Apologies podcast) and Darrell Taylor (Taylor network of Podcasts). For years Julian and Shawn Pryor worked on the “Longboxes on 22s” tumblr (www.longboxeson22s.tumblr.com ) that mashed up hip hop culture and comic books only to go ignored by Marvel and DC.
This discussion goes far beyond the ideas of cultural appropriation into a discourse of hiring practices, how to find new talent, what the role of an editor should be and being racially tactful. Also what rappers really do fit which superheroes!
