Monsters Are Such Interesting People – Kongo

Kongo (1932) I’d never even heard of this pre-code gem, that is a remake of Tod KongoBrowning/ Lon Chaney’s West of Zanzibar (which I haven’t seen) from 1928. Walter Huston is a disfigured cripple in Africa who tricks a tribe into thinking he is a god with common magician tricks. The sexy Lupe Velez is his sex slave in a dress that is always an inch from falling off. In an 18 year revenge plot, he kidnaps the daughter of the man who crippled him, puts her in a monastery until she’s grown, then keeps her like an animal, feverish and perpetually drunk. A drug-crazed white doctor who happens upon them is the girl’s would-be savior…if he can keep off the damn dope! This movie was INSANE, I loved every second of it.
