I am a tried at true nerdgirl. I wear my fangirl badge with pride, and I am loving all the Comic, retro, remakes of my childhood that Hollywood is pumping out right now. For all of you that are tired of Transformers sequels and super hero films, sorry it’s my fault! I am the one of the people yelling, “Shut up and take my money!” halfway through the trailer. With this being said, you have to know how excited I was when one of my childhood obsessions was announced to come to big screen! Jem and the Holograms. I was thrilled! Itty bitty Farah spent many hours in the mirror singing the Jem theme song with mommy’s Revlon smeared over one eye. With the exception of She-ra, there is no other show that crazier about as a kid. I had every doll, (ever Rio) and the tour bus. I went through AAA batteries like water keeping those flashing earring’s going.
When the trailer finally came out I was pumped! Then I watched the trailer, and I was little sad. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think the trailer is awful or a travesty, or anything of thesort. It looked like a fun, movie about a young diverse girl rock group. However I feel it was missing the biggest part of Jem and the Holograms. No, not Jem or Synergy, but the 1980’s. Jem is seriously a show of its time. The big hair, the synthesizer music, and all of the glorious animal print spandex, are as big a part of what made show great. The premise of the show is well crazy: A record company owner doesn’t trust his partner so instead of blowing the whistle on him or collecting evidence against him he does the next best thing. Secretly builds a sentient computer capable of projecting holograms through a pair of tacky earrings! Brilliant right!? The entire premise will make your head hurt if you try to make sense of it, but no one did because the show was just over the top fun! There were car chases, thugs, drama, orphans, and at any moment the action could blend perfectly into a music video! How could anyone focus on a plot?

Admittedly there are things in the carton that would be a challenge to pull off, but not impossible. Synergy and the hologram projecting earrings are a stretch but thanks to a decade of superhero movies and shows, things like this aren’t a far of a reach. I don’t need holograms and car chases, but to be a Jem movie, fun, 80’s and over the top have to part of the equation. Anything else and it might as well be any girl band movie. I know I’ve only seen the trailer, but I can’t help the way I feel, and how I feel is meh. Feeling “meh” about an all time childhood favorite coming to the big screen is always a disappointment. It is nerd rage clique but this not my Jem and the Holograms. However my preteen daughter was pretty meh about too, which means it’s no her generations either. Too bad I was looking forward to cosplaying at the premiere.
