Your Source For the Force: Review of A New Dawn

So when Disney bought the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas, they had a decision to make. Deal with 30 years of written EU, or start from scratch. The obvious choice was to create a committee called Lucasfilm Ltd.’s Story Group, and decide what in the rich history of Star Wars is real and which is a “Legends” story meaning it is not cannon. A lot of stories that many of us read and loved, are no longer considered cannon. Whether you are happy, sad or down right angry with this decision, this is what Disney felt was best to tell the stories they wanted to tell, without being boggled down by restrictions set by these stories.

John Jackson Miller was given the honor of writing the first book in this new cannon. In what I thought was an interesting move, this first book of the new cannon did not feature, Luke, Han and the rest of the gang we all know and love. In fact it featured none of the characters we even have knowledge of. Set six years prior to the start of the animated series Star Wars Rebels, it introduces us to two of the main characters of the show, Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla. Through this novel we learn some insightful back story, about their past and how they met.

This book was an enjoyable read, JJM did not disappoint the fans in writing the first cannon novel in this new Star Wars universe. The plot was very believable, the character development was strong, and when you can see every word on the page in your head, Miller did something right. If the majority of the novels going forward are as good a read as this book, I know as a Star Wars fan, I have nothing to fear. 4 out of 5 stars.
