This week, Marvel Studios Guardians Of The Galaxy passed $700 million at the worldwide box office. This gives the characters based on Marvel Comics four films that have passed that number. Captain America The Winter Soldier opened on April 4 and has grossed $714 million worldwide. Amazing Spider-Man 2 opened May 2 and has grossed $709 million worldwide. X – Men Days of Future Past opened May 23 and has made $746 million worldwide. Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy opened August 1 and has made $705 million worldwide so far. It’s certain to pass box office numbers for both Captain America The Winter Soldier and Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now Spider-Man is a Sony Studio production, X – Men is FOX and Captain America and Guardians Of The Galaxy are Marvel Studios films. But still, to have four properties based on Marvel Characters be so successful is amazing. Over the next 6 years, there will be over 40 comic-based films coming from Marvel, Sony, Fox and Warner Brothers studios. Will the bubble burst?? The $709 million for Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the lowest in the Spider-Man film franchise history. Maybe the fatigue has hit that franchise already. SONY has pushed back Spider-Man 3 and 4 and decided to go with the Sinister Six film instead. They have also scrapped there Venom film. And there have been rumors that SONY is willing to work with Marvel Studios on future Spider-Man films.
This week, Warner Brothers set in motion their cinematic universe plans with release dates for Justice League, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg. Based on the success of this summer we will be getting a ton of comic-based films and television shows. DC has the very popular Arrow and Flash on CW. Gotham is on FOX with I Zombie and Constantine debuting soon. Marvel has Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Daredevil coming to Netflix. So, let’s see what happens over the next few years. If this summer is any indication, all these upcoming projects can find success.
But now for this summer films I’ll give my personal ratings. My favorites where – in this order:
X – Men Days of Future Past.
Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Captain America the Winter Soldier.
Guardians Of The Galaxy.
The four Marvel films weren’t the only comic-based films this summer. Transformer Age of Extinction cross the billion dollar worldwide mark. TMNT went over $400 million. The Manga based film Edge of Tomorrow did $379 million worldwide. But, Sin City a Dame for a Kill flopped. So, there was a miss.
