Man Of Tai Chi
This week’s movie pick is Man Of Tai Chi, which just hit Instant Streaming on Netflix. Man Of Tai Chi is Keanu Reeves directorial debut (WHOA!) and is a surprisingly entertaining kung fu movie. Now, you might be thinking that Tai Chi is what those old Chinese people do in the parks at 6am. It is and it isn’t. It is the same Tai Chi you see old people doing sometimes. But, when used in fighting, the movements are sped up by a lot and the hits are real. Man Of Tai Chi follows Chen, a Tai Chi student who because of his skills with Tai Chi is invited to join an underground fighting tournament where the fights are always to the death. The tournament is run by a mysterious crime boss played by Keanu. The movie is your typical kung fu movie, but with a few nice touches that really shine and make the movie a lot of fun. Chen has to fight a lot once he joins the fight circuit and every fight is against a different master of a martial art. That’s what makes this movie worth watching. Seeing the best fighters go up against Chen is intense. A few of the fights get pretty intense. One in particular versus a star of The Raid stands out. It looks like Keanu learned a lot from the people who helped him during the Matrix movies. He took the lessons learned from making those movies and made a fun kung fu movie. Worth checking out.
